Fritz Hansen Series 7
Designer: Arne Jacobsen (1902 – 1971)
Arne Emil Jacobsen born 1902 was a Danish architect and designer who is remembered for his contribution to architectural functionalism as well as the worldwide success he enjoyed with simple but effective chair designs. Although primarily an architect, Jacobsen is most remembered for his work as a furniture designer, although he never used the word ‘designer’, notoriously disliking it.
Arne Jacobsens main inspiration for chairs and the use of bent plywood came from Charles and Ray Eames, two more inspirational furniture designers who will be remembered for creating timeless classic designs.
Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansens working relationship dates back to 1934, but it was in 1952 the breakthrough came with Jacobsens now infamous ‘Ant’. A chair that was supported by only three legs (also available with four legs) and whose shell represents an ants body, especially if flattened.
Fritz Hansen Series 7 – 61 years of timeless design
Following this came the succession of the Series 7 in 1955, this was the real point that Jacobsens name, along with Fritz Hansen was propelled into furniture history.
The Series 7 was quickly labelled a design fit for the future which led to the infamous chair becoming the most sold stacking chair in design history. Becoming a style icon the Series 7 is seen by many as one of the finest examples of timeless design.
Still after six decades, through times of huge changes in technology, culture and lifestyle the Series 7 has remained as popular as ever. Over 5 million units have been sold since the chair was first released in 1951 and is one of the most copied reproduction chairs in the world.

The slim white ash shell is manufactured using 9 layers of pressure moulded sliced veneer. Supported on chromed steel legs the front upholstered seat is covered in a durable black fabric. Adding to their sophisticated look are linking clips that allow these chairs to be connected, adding a uniform look when being used as waiting room chairs or for large conferences. With the ability to stack, the Series 7 is an ideal chair for space conscious environments, meaning they can be neatly moved away when not needed.
